The UAE, from Sunday, will host the 57th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO), the world's leading scientific competition in the field of chemistry. Bringing together over 360 students from more than 90 countries in Dubai from July 6-14, this edition marks the largest participation in the Olympiad's history since its launch in 1968, underscoring the UAE's growing position in global science education. Sarah Al Amiri, Minister of Education, noted that hosting this prestigious global event reflects the UAE's vision to become a hub for education, science, innovation, and academic excellence, and reiterates the country's unwavering commitment to nurturing young scientific talent. She added, 'This milestone will inspire Emirati students and help shape a new generation of scientists capable of innovation and global competitiveness. It also represents a national opportunity to enhance the quality of education and develop a learning environment that keeps pace with the world's best models.' Zaki Nusseibeh, Cultural Adviser to the UAE President and Chancellor of the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU), stated, 'The International Chemistry Olympiad 2025 serves as a prestigious global platform that celebrates academic excellence and fosters a spirit of scientific innovation among youth. It also underscores the prominent role of UAEU in advancing scientific research and learning. Our participation in this significant event reaffirms UAEU's commitment to national leadership in the generation, dissemination, and application of knowledge for the greater benefit of society.' He added, 'Through our engagement in this initiative, we reaffirm our mission to address global challenges and to contribute to shaping a future built on the foundations of knowledge, discovery, and innovation. At UAEU, we firmly believe that empowering youth and supporting global scientific collaboration are essential pillars for building a more prosperous and sustainable world.' Organised by the UAE Ministry of Education (MoE), the IChO 2025 agenda will feature advanced theoretical and practical exams, cultural tours, and social events that promote cultural exchange among youth from across the globe. This edition introduces cutting-edge technological innovations, including digital tools to monitor exam progress and an integrated practical testing environment, designed as a model for future educational laboratories. Four students, chosen through a rigorous national selection process, will represent the UAE at IChO 2025. The national team has completed an intensive training programme, including specialised workshops at the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) and a science camp at the Sirius Education Centre in Russia. This preparation reflects MoE's dedication to empowering national talent to meet international standards of scientific excellence. IChO 2025 aims to motivate Emirati youth to study chemistry and related sciences while encouraging educational institutions to update their curricula to meet global standards.

Heavy snow hits Turkey's northeast as southwest burns

Record low temperatures in Rize Temperatures plummeted in mountainous areas inland from Rize, a town situated about 120 kilometers (75 miles) from the Georgian border. Gencaga Karafazlioglu, a local journalist, remarked that he had never witnessed snow in July before. He noted, 'In Rize, we're used to weather anomalies. We've had snow several times in March, but never this much. The older generation recalls snow in July 30 or 40 years ago, but not like this.' Impact on Ovit Yaylasi In Ovit Yaylasi, a plateau located approximately 2,500 meters (8,200 feet) above sea level, fields were blanketed in white after the snowfall. Social media footage revealed the stunning transformation of the landscape. The snowfall covered an area stretching at least 100 kilometers, impacting regions from Anzer Yaylasi through Kackar Mountains National Park and beyond. According to Karafazlioglu, the town of Artvin, located about 50 kilometers inland, was the worst affected. Battle against wildfires Meanwhile, firefighters were engaged in battling at least 10 "major" forest fires across the country. Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakli reported at a press conference that wildfires in Izmir province, where two fatalities occurred on Thursday, were now primarily under control. However, strong winds continued to pose a threat to Mugla in the southwest and Hatay in the south, where an "intense struggle" was underway to control the blaze near the Syrian border. Causes and arrests related to wildfires Yumakli revealed that there had been 624 wildfires in the past week, many sparked by faulty electric cables. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya reported that 44 suspects had been arrested, with 10 placed in detention. Most of those apprehended were workers or farmers whose machinery inadvertently caused sparks that ignited the fires.

Heritage Conference recommends documentation of travel literature

Calls for contemporary critical analysis Participants urged a reevaluation of the writings of travelers and Orientalists using contemporary scientific criticism methodologies. They advocated for analytical comparisons between groups of travelers from various geographical regions and similar time periods to derive a more realistic portrayal and compare it with available local studies. Importance of practical laboratories The attendees emphasised the need to establish practical laboratories for translating Western research and studies on travel literature and forming scientific committees to review untranslated travel accounts, particularly Russian works. Extended conference duration and digital resources Among the recommendations was the proposal to extend the conference from two to three days and to publish the presented research in a scientific book. They also suggested creating an online library featuring works of travelers and Orientalists, along with a specialized database for researchers and translators in this field. Encouraging diverse critical studies The recommendations further called for stimulating critical studies addressing representations of the "other" in popular heritage through various approaches, including anthropology, semiotics, narratives, and post-colonial studies. Additionally, they highlighted the need to examine the interaction between oral and narrative cultures as described by travelers, questioning the ideological and epistemological backgrounds that shaped their representations and deconstructing the positions of self and other in their writings. Promoting heritage awareness Dr Abdulaziz Al Musallam, Chairman of the Sharjah Institute for Heritage, stated, "The recommendations from the Second Heritage Conference embody our vision at the Sharjah Institute for Heritage, which aims to establish awareness of the importance of reading popular heritage from multiple perspectives, especially through the writings of travelers and Orientalists. Through this conference, we sought to initiate a critical intellectual dialogue with these records, opening new horizons for understanding the self and the other, and enhancing the presence of our heritage in the global cultural sphere with a scientific spirit and objective approach.
